WEMS (formerly WEMT) with AVH Global
I just finished teaching a Wilderness Medical Associates' 5-day WEMS Upgrade course in Ithaca, NY. This is the exact same course formerly known as the WEMT. It covers the same skills with the same focus and attention to practicing emergency medicine in an austere field situation. An important aspect of a WEMS course is learning to perform in a variety of challenging environmental scenarios with limited and delayed resources. Conducting class in a variety of challenging outdoor venues is vital to helping EMS practicioners build a new "box of tools". These new and modified tools result in better patient care when we might be with our patients for hours or days with only the gear we have carried on our backs.
It doesn't matter where you are, PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) is important!
Primary Assessments: Find and Fix the life threats fast!
Don't forget to check the back!!! (you know how to do a spine-stable roll)
Secondary Assessments: Physical Exam and SAMPLE Histories on different patients in the same accident...
Improvised Carry: Brainstorming ways to move patients without an ambulance, stretcher, stokes, stair chair or other convenient contraption....
Knowledge of knot tying is critical when traditional equipment isn't available.
Know when and HOW to improvise, adapt and overcome!
The WEMS course will challenge you to take your emergency medical skills to a whole new level--you will learn to think critically about your patients in the absence of resources and ready communications with more highly trained personnel.
Besides, this is a great way to take care of a bunch of your continuing education requirements to maintain your EMT certification...
